Squirrel Cage Jail, Gallatin, Missouri. Built in 1889 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Gallatin’s Squirrel Cage Jail was inspired by the 1883 trial of Frank James as the James Gang roamed freely for the most part in northern Missouri. Also known as a “rotary jail” this octagonal-shaped jail has a rotating deck divided into individual jail cells spinning on a single axis. The jail was in use by the county sherrif’s office until 1975. Reclamation and renovation began in 1991. This is one of three jails of its kind still standing today. Tours by appointment.
